History of the Sapporo Convention Network

2001
  • October: A network of convention-related industries in Sapporo was established.
  • The Network held a convention seminar entitled Convention Community.
  • The Guidebook to Convention-related Businesses in Sapporo was published.
  • The Sapporo Convention Support website was established.
2002
  • The Network engaged in regional activation seminar activities.
  • The Convention Market public event was held.
  • A convention planning competition was held. The Network won first prize in the Hokkaido Photo Convention.
  • The World CM Festival in Sapporo was held, and has been held every year since.
2003
  • The Network was tasked with the planning and implementation of attractions and the welcome reception for the Winter Convention Experience Tour.
  • Local facilities and spaces were surveyed as part of efforts to rediscover convention spaces.
  • The Network collected information on local attractions and published it on its website as Attraction Sozukan (lit. “attraction database”).
  • The Hokkaido Photo Convention 2003 was held at the Sapporo Convention Center.
  • A seminar was held as part of efforts to attract major conventions such as the general assemblies of medical associations and the G8 Summit.
  • The Sapporo Convention Service Guide was published.
2004
  • The Network inspected the Slow Food/Slow Life Exhibition in Niigata.
  • The Network engaged in seminar activities.
  • Poster design submissions to attract conventions were invited.
  • The Hokkaido Photo Convention 2004/Hokkaido Sakagura Festival 2004 were held.
  • The Network held a lecture meeting to mark the NPO’s establishment.
  • A proposal for environmentally friendly conventions entitled Dissemination of Green Conventions was adopted by the City of Sapporo.
2005
  • Programs to disseminate green conventions were implemented in the form of workshops, inspection of pioneering initiatives, distribution of awareness-raising fliers and implementation of a questionnaire survey.
  • The Network participated in the backyard tour to Expo 2005 Aichi in Japan.
  • The Hokkaido Photo Convention 2005/Hokkaido Sakagura Festival 2005 were held.
2006
  • Sapporo Convention Network President Yasushi Fujita delivered a lecture at the Tottori Convention Festival.
  • The International Tourism & Convention Forum 2006 was held.
  • The Food and Tourism Convention 2006/Hokkaido Sakagura Festival 2006 were held.
  • Sapporo Convention Network President Yasushi Fujita delivered a lecture at a get-together for members of the Kanazawa Convention Bureau.
2007
  • The Sapporo Convention Service Guidebook was published.
  • A total of 10 Sapporo Event Convention Academy events were held.
  • The Network was entrusted by the Japan Environment Association with the collection of information/case examples and other related business concerning international conventions and other events. The Network implemented interview surveys in Portland, Vancouver and Germany as part of a case study on international green conventions and reported the results.
  • The Network participated in the International Meetings Exhibition (IME) as an exhibitor, and has since participated every year.
2008
  • The Network’s proposal for the Hokkaido Information Center opened for the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit was adopted.
  • The Network produced the official poster for the Hokkaido Toyako Summit Preparation Council.
  • The Network participated in a Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) conference held in Vancouver, Canada.
  • The International Tourism & Convention Forum 2008 was held.
  • The Summit Web Environmental Exhibition website was launched.
  • The Legacy Carbon-Offset Summit Forest program was initiated.
  • The Summit Forest program was adopted as a creative project with applications encouraged under the Midori no Bokin (Green Fund) initiative.
2009
  • The Network participated in the GMIC conference held in Pittsburgh, USA.
  • The Japan Convention Study Committee was established.
  • The International Tourism & Convention Forum 2009 was held in Matsue & Yonago.
  • The Network was entrusted by the City of Sapporo with business concerning basic surveys on convention hosting and attraction.
  • Sapporo Convention Network President Yasushi Fujita delivered a lecture at a workshop on human resource development for conventions in Shizuoka Prefecture.
  • Grants were provided by the Japan Fund for Global Environment for the Network’s promotion of eco-friendly initiatives through conferences and other events.
  • The Network was entrusted by the Hokkaido Government with the Concierge Center’s business.
2010
  • The Network participated in the GMIC conference held in Denver, USA.
  • The International Tourism & Convention Forum 2010 was held in Sapporo.
  • Sapporo Convention Network President Yasushi Fujita delivered a lecture at a Niigata Prefecture PCO Liaison Meeting.
